National Center for Engagement in Diabetes Research

On June 2nd, 2025, CEDER organized a consultation for Dr. Adesuwa (Ade) Olomu, MD, MS, FMCP, FACP, and her team on their Office-GAP (Office Guidelines Applied to Practice) proposal to NIH. The patient-provider activation program, which includes shared decision making and digital intervention, focuses on behavioral barriers to cardiovascular disease risk factor management and medication adherence among FQHC adult patients with type 2 diabetes management.

The following experts participated in the consultation: Susanne B. Nicholas, MD, MPH, PhD, and Donna L. Washington, MD, MPH, FAC, from the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System and David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA; and Antoinette Schoenthaler, EdD, from the Department of Population Health, NYU Langone Health.

The team of experts provided feedback on a variety of topics, including project and topic materials, study design, and general research guidance. They discussed additional funding mechanisms at NIH; making sure the proposal had clear, testable hypotheses and 5-7 innovations; and positioning the intervention within a strong implementation science or dissemination framework. Finally, they suggested incorporating training for both providers and patients to ensure effective adoption of the study tools, and encouraged Dr. Olomu and her team to reach out to the NIH program officer early to confirm the best mechanism to align with their priorities. According to Dr. Olomu, “My research team had a fantastic experience participating in a CEDER consultation. The insight/guidance my research team got helped us in moving forward with our plan to apply for our next R01 grant with some clarity. Thank You to the Expert Team!!!”

1964 Project Grant Award

September 6, 2024

The Office-GAP program made Michigan State University News in a Dean’s Update where it was announced our NIH-funded grant had received the 1964 Project grant award. GAP first made MSU campus news when the NIH awarded a $3.75 million grant which kickstarted the GAP Program. Named for the momentous year of 1964, in which MSU founded the College of Human Medicine and the United States signed into law the Civil Rights Act, the 1964 Project is focused on advancing scholarship in justice, inclusion, equity, and diversity. This grant funding will allow the Department of Medicine, of which the GAP Program is a part of, to continue working to address health equity and health disparities through action on social determinants of health (SDOH) and the structural inequities that determine them.
